Searchستشارك جنو/لينكس مصر فى ورشة استخدام الإنترنت فى التنمية وحقوق الإنسان التى ينظمها مركز مركز مجتمع المعرفة بتنظيم جلسة عن استخدام البرمجيات الحرة أو مفتوحة المصدر و عن حقوق الملكية الفكرية.
نظم الورشة تحت رعاية جمعية نشطاء على الإنترنت ومقرها بالولايات المتحدة, ومركز مجتمع المعرفة وهو مركز جديد تحت التأسيس مقره القاهرة, ومديرته د.مارلين تادرس, والتى تقوم حاليا بتدريس الكمبيوتر والإنترنت بالجامعات بالولايات المتحدة.
د مارلين وعدت أن تشاركنا فى أول اجتماع لنا و المتوقع الاتفاق على التفاصيل بعد الاجتماع.
ستقام الورشة 3 مرات فى الفترات 12-14 يوليو و 19-21 يوليو و 2-4 أغسطس من 9 صباحا حتى 4 مساء (مواعيد شغل يعنى) محتاجين متطوعين لادارة الجلسة.
EGLUG will participate in the Internet usage in development and human rights activism workshop organized by MENGOS by organizing the FOSS usage and intelectual property issues session.
Dr. Marlin Tadross who is organizing the workshop promised to join us in our first meeting, we can discuss details after the meeting.
Workshop will be held 3 times on the 12-14 July, 19-21 July and 2-4 August from 9am to 4pm (working hours :-( and we need volunteers.

its not a silly time when you consider that most who will attend will do it as part of their jobs.
of course it limits volunteers abilities to attend and IMO the most important activists are volunteer activists but unfortunatly even in the fields of development and human rights in Egypt volunteerism isn't that popular :-(

in the meeting it was said that our session would only require one hour so i guess we should ask for the first or the last hour sinse it would be easy for someone to leave work early or go to work late than taking a day off
i would prefer that it is before 11 in the morning

Program and others stuff
Ok guys.. I do have a drupal account but my password is in my password thing in the States so I created a new account. Maalesh. Now in terms of program, here is what I am suggestiong as possible times: First workshop: from 12-14 July. The session on Open Source is on the 13th at 2.30 till 4. But, I have a session that we could substitue from 1.30-2.30. So.. the options are: either from 1.30-2.30 or from 2.30-4 Second workshop: from 19-21 July: session should be on the 20th. Same times. third workshop: 2-4 August; session should be on the 3rd; same times. I am very happy that you are all excited about this and am waiting for your responses. Any volunteers will be greatly appreciated. One thing I suggest if I may: while the session is totally totally open for you and you may do what you want with it, may I please suggest that you be far less 'techie' than you ever were or are, and you need to really explain very practical steps. I heard you all debating about the tehcnical support and I was worried.. only because we cannot tell people here it is, but we will provide no technical support if something goes wrong, or that you have to learn it yourself and good luck. Perhaps I misunderstood of course, so any corrections to this are welcome and any ideas are also welcome. :-) Great job you guys - and Manal.

I am so happy you will both come. Great. Ok... so in terms of coordination, here is the place: 11A Hassan Sabri, Zamalek. The building is on the far right of the gorgeous palace and if you have time go into the palace and see the absolutely beauty of it!.
Now I gave you the time.. so it is up to you.. the 13th at either what did I say??.. umm.. 2.30-4 or 1.30-2.30, right? so... let me know which and just come along. Also, the intellectual property.. hmm.. I know you want that too.. You know ya Alaa, go ahead and do that too. I will put in my two pence and you put in yours. When? the point is that it will be in a session that involves other intros to the topic of internet rights, and that includes privacy issues and digital divide and freedom of expression etc... So I suggest that in that session i wil put my two ps, and then when you come to the Linux session you can give your two ps? no? do you need more time? Let me knowwwwww

forgot one important thingy
Forgot to invite you guys - and Manal - to this event that I am organizing tomorrow, Wednesday at Sheppard's at 6 p.m. just so you know, if I knew about al Sakya i would have organized it there, but it would have brought in the 'old guard' and al Sakya should be kept yuuuuuuuuung. So anyway.. the event is at 6 p.m and it is entitled: "Toward an Arab Caucus at the Summit on Information Society in Tunis 05". I am trying TRYING to form a caucus because there was no Arab representation in phase I of the summit. If anyone is interested, come and attend, and perhaps we can even form a youth group or a crazy group or something. Seriously... do come. It is open for all of you. I would have liked ot have sent you the documentation and what we will discuss, but basically what we will discuss is whether we should form a caucus and why and what is its mandate and who are its members. Yes? Tomorrow, 6 p.m. at Sheppard's and frankly I am not sure people will come at 6 but certainly 6.30 or thereabouts.

Oh.. alaa, I did send an invitation to your dad's center and I don't know if anyone will attend. BUT.. PLEASE tell him this is also a personal invitation and ask him to come. Would you? another thing... the workshops I am organizing have a formal title which is: "Maximizing the use and effectiveness of the Internet in human rights and development."

Well, my key concern is offering their solutions at a little or no charge. The problem will be the updates to these systems, they will never come cheap next time. The zero cost will lure decision makers that think that the only benfit from FOSS is the low costs.
