Assalam Alikum,

I have am Acer scanner (Mirascan, 340P) which is so common here in Egypt. I found out that I can't use it on my FC3 Linux and also on RHEL. The computer complain that I have no scaner connected. I have it connected and I use it from Windows without problems. It remains to say that I have added the scanner after the installation process.

thank you very much

M B

maybe you need some additiona

Pronco's picture

maybe you need some additional kernel modules

is the scanner connected via SCSII or USB?

I used to be indecisive .. but now I'm not so sure

Acer Scaner

Thanks, It is connected through a scsi port and I use a kernel 2.4.21EL

Thank you for ur time,

scan-find-scaner

mborn's picture

Peace!

I have initiated the following command, $ scan-find-scaner and I had this message; No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

What does it mean to load a scsi driver for my scsi adaptor?

Thank you for ur time,

M B

scan?

phaeronix's picture

that's supposed to be "sane-find-scanner"

try "lspci" to see if the pci scsi card is seen. If you have "pcimodules" try it and compare its output to "lsmod" output. try to modprobe missing modules.

for sane scanner support always look here :

http://sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl

and use a decent distro, try mandrake or knoppix.

post your findings here.

Descent!

What do you mean by descent? please explain.

Thank you for ur time,

M B

It means:

phaeronix's picture

It means I don't beleive you should waste your time with FC or RHEL.

2.4 kernels are quite old. try a 2.6 one.

can you list SCSI devices

Pronco's picture

can you list SCSI devices

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

I used to be indecisive .. but now I'm not so sure

I had to install some additio

Pronco's picture

I had to install some additional kernel packages from third-party distros to get an old SCSI controler running

I used to be indecisive .. but now I'm not so sure

scsi suppport

Pronco's picture

your kernel needs to have SCSI support built into the kernel when its compiled or as a module

I used to be indecisive .. but now I'm not so sure

Dear Pronco,

I am all ears to kow what you did so I can make my scanner work.

Thank you for ur time,

M B

Be sane, don't waste your time

Don't waste your time with those cheap parallel Acer (sometimes called Vuego) scanners they are not supported on linux and will never will. Even windows support is very bad and breaks alot.

Check this list for supported scanners on linux

You are right!

mborn's picture

You mean I should change all the hardware I have each time I fail to make it work under Linux!? Well, what about other OS which use these SAME HW and make all the work without complaining, and never break up in the middle of the way? We are talking about an OS which we defy the world with, right? then I think we should find solutions, and not just ask people to change the whole world for the new (and yet Powerful) OS we have at our hand. This is what I have in mind when I talk about freedom. We are to free ourselves from the old and proprietary stuff...but also should be able to use what we WAISTED our money on, otherwise,... the whole idea will collapse

PS./ Ironically, just few posts above, someone here said he could make it work!!! You see I was not the only INSANE one here if you still think that those who try it are!

Thank you for ur time,

M B

what kind of scanner is it

Alaa's picture

I don't get it, is it parallel or scsi?

cheers,
Alaa

Do your homework

phaeronix's picture

If someone got it to work, he did his homework. Do your homework instead of writing these things.

When we advise someone to replace his hardware, it's because the hardware is not effecient. Like the well known motorolla SM56. You don't have to do it though.

I gave you some commands you didn't try them.

We gave you the scanner database and you didn't look

I looked at the database and it seems there is no scanner with that name that works on the scsi bus.

Maybe it's LPT ( parallel ) and you don't know.

I recommended you install mandrake, or try knoppix livecd.

If you want to stick to FC or RHEL then get a 2.6 kernel RPM from rawhide.

I have the 620p

whirlpool's picture

Although, it produces OK pictures. It is a horrible peice of malfunctioning plastic when it comes to transfering data to the PC.

  • It freezes windows alot.
  • It lacked winXp drivers for a very long time. and added support is messy. I had a hard time getting it to work properly with the drivers it comes with. And windowsXP suddenly claims that there are no scanners installed.
  • Its software hasn't been updated for a loooonong time.
  • Parallel scanners transfere rates are very slow.
  • Its a very old scanner also.
  • Scanners are no longer expensive.

You know what I am going to do.. I am going to sell it via ewaseet and buy a new one. But before I buy a new one, I am going to check the SANE database first.

If however you have the time and energy to reverse engineer the proprietary protocol that this scanner use... go ahead, you will make lots of people happy.

what a SANE answer!

mborn's picture

Peace!

I am so sad you had all these troubles with your scanner :( Mine, which is 340P (pretty older) never gave me these TROUBLES. I was told once that linux lives happily with other OSs and uses OLD HW peacefully and in fact loves old HW as these are the ones it is tested on first, correct me if I am wrong. But I think you are right about WRITING a new driver for it. I am to ASK the tech center at my university to handle this issue if possible and tell you the results. I am not counting on this though, as they used to tell me "why not use windows for God sake", ... I wish you have an answer for them.

Oh, by the way, FC3 has a 2.6 kernel as far as I know.

PS. I hope I am sane this time.

Thank you for ur time,

M B

stop it

phaeronix's picture

Just volunteer some of your time for your own sake, the only way we can help is if you want to help yourself.

Watch it

mborn's picture

Peace!

First: Do not give me orders and do not shout.

Second: Don't get biased

Last: When you ask a question in a forum you are supposed to find answers, not to be asked to be SANE. This simply means you are NOT SANE, YOU ARE INSANE. I don't accept that. Words like Kabbar dema3'ak, ya 3am shoof 7aga taniya agda3, Yaah da enta min al3asr el-7agary....are fine with me, but BE SANE, no it can't go.

This is my final post about the subject, hope only for this post.

Enjoy your forum

Thank you for ur time,

M B
